Under Pressure: Customizing SOVTs for Professional Voice Users

Tuesday, October 21

5pm PDT / 6pm MDT/ 7pm CDT / 8pm EDT

Live webinar on Zoom / Replay available for one week

Semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTEs) are a cornerstone of voice therapy, but knowing about them isn’t enough—clinicians need the skills to adapt them for the real-world challenges professional voice users face. This course introduces you to the tools needed to customize and modify SOVTs to target fatigue, strain, and effort. With a focus on bridging theory and practice, you’ll gain a clear understanding of both the “why” and the “how” behind effective SOVT use.

Through interactive learning, you’ll explore the physiological principles that make SOVTs effective, learn to tailor them to each client’s unique vocal needs, and develop strategies for carryover into daily speaking and performance contexts. By the end of the course, you’ll feel prepared to make informed clinical decisions and guide your clients toward more sustainable, functional outcomes.

In this one-hour introductory level course, attendees will attendees will gain the skills to customize and modify SOVTs to best meet the needs of their voice clients.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the physiological principles behind semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTEs) and their therapeutic effects.

  2. Customize a variety of SOVT exercises to meet the specific needs of professional voice users presenting with common vocal challenges.

  3. Develop strategies for guiding a client to generalize modified SOVT exercises into daily speaking and performance tasks.
