Under Pressure: Customizing SOVTs for Professional Voice Users
1 hour course recorded live on October 21, 2025
Replay available through December 31, 2025
Semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercises have become fundamental to effective voice work, but knowing about them isn't enough. The real challenge for voice clinicians is knowing how to adapt them for the high-stakes demands of professional voice users.
This course goes beyond the basics. We'll show you exactly how to customize and modify SOVTs to target the specific issues professional voices face, such as fatigue, strain, and effort. We'll bridge the gap between theory and practice, teaching you to strategically adjust key variables like tongue and jaw position, airflow, and pharyngeal shaping.
Through interactive learning, you'll gain a clear understanding of both the "why" and the "how" behind effective SOVT use. By the end of the course, you’ll feel confident and competent to create unique SOVT exercises tailored to each client's vocal needs, leading to more sustainable, functional outcomes for their daily speaking and performance.
Whether you're an SLP, a voice teacher, an acting coach, a student, or a curious learner, this course is designed for you.
In this one-hour introductory level course, attendees will attendees will gain the skills to customize and modify SOVTs to best meet the needs of their voice clients.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Identify the physiological principles behind semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTEs) and their therapeutic effects.
Customize a variety of SOVT exercises to meet the specific needs of professional voice users presenting with common vocal challenges.
Develop strategies for guiding a client to generalize modified SOVT exercises into daily speaking and performance tasks.
